GI Grand Rounds

Weekly on Wednesday, 12:00pm

The Fellow presents cases of unusual interest and discusses the pathophysiology and latest evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis and therapy.  Once a month, a guest speaker of national repute is invited to lecture. 

GI Radiology Conference

Monthly on Wednesday, 1:00-1:40pm

This conference gives the Fellows an adequate knowledge of gastrointestinal radiology.  For this conference, the Fellow presents appropriate cases from the inpatient and outpatient services to a radiologist.  Attendings and house staff from GI and radiology are present.  The Fellow takes part in the discussion.  On regular occasions, the radiologist reviews selected illustrative cases from the radiology library. 

Pathology Conference

Weekly on Wednesday, 1:45-2:45pm

For this conference, the Fellow presents cases that had biopsies from the inpatient and outpatient services.  The pathologist reviews the findings with the Fellow who participates in the discussion. 

Didactic Sessions

Monthly on Wednesday, 3:00-4:00pm

These sessions involve lectures by faculty and cover a range of clinical topics, many of which are selected by fellows for faculty presentation. 

Journal Club

Monthly on Wednesday

Attendance at clinical journal club is required by all Fellows and takes place during the teaching sessions following GI Grand Rounds.  Presenters select recent articles of interest.  Faculty and Fellows take part in the presentation in which the objectives, methods, results and conclusions are reviewed and the paper evaluated critically for methodology, science and significance. 

Basic Science Seminar

Monthly

In this exercise, which takes place following GI Grand Rounds, Fellows take turns presenting material from standard textbooks of Gastroenterology-Hepatology.  The entire curriculum is covered over the course of three years.  Members of the faculty are present to add to the presentations and comment of relevance. 

Board Review

Monthly

This activity takes place following GI Grand Rounds.  Fellows take turns presenting GI Board Review material. 

GI Surgical Interdisciplinary Conference

Monthly

GI cases of surgical importance are presented and discussed by GI and surgical faculty. 

Mortality and Morbidity Conference

Quarterly on Wednesday

This conference takes place after the teaching sessions and consists of Fellow presentation of cases of serious adverse events at each institution over the past three months, a critical analysis of the problem and discussion of literature that bears on the issue.  Attendings add to the discussion and development of recommendations on how to avoid repetition of the problems. 

Coding Sessions

Quarterly

This meeting is part of the system-based practice curriculum.  The institution’s coding expert reviews issues, and changes rules and requirements to meet appropriate coding levels. 

Research in Progress

July and August, weekly on Wednesday

In place of GI Grand Rounds during the summer, faculty take turns presenting results of their latest research.  Fellows who have completed their research also present their date and the results are analyzed critically. 

Orientation

July and August

Orientation includes and introduction to endoscopy and in-service on cleaning and care of GI endoscopic equipment.
