Situated in central Connecticut, the University of Connecticut Cardiology Program is a three-year, ACGME-approved academic fellowship training program that leads to Board Eligibility in Cardiovascular Disease. The training takes place largely at the John Dempsey Hospital and at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Centerl. The two larger hospitals offer complete cardiologic services.

Program applicants are selected through the Cardiology Matching Program after three years of training in Internal Medicine. Fellows are accepted for three years of training, but continuation in the program is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance. Our first time Cardiology Board pass rate is nearly 100%.

The fellowship program is structured to provide extensive training in all of the major disciplines of non-invasive and invasive cardiology, in cardiologic patient care, and in clinical, translational and basic research.

The major portion of the first two years is devoted to core rotations in clinical cardiology, non-invasive, and invasive cardiology (including electrophysiology and pacemaker management). Protected time for research is provided. Weekly didactic sessions, monthly journal clubs, cardiovascular ground rounds, and Citywide clinical conferences cover broad topics in cardiology.

Each fellow has a one-half day per week continuity experience at a participating facility with responsibility for the outpatient management of a group of assigned patients for the duration of the fellowship.

In the second and third year, there are opportunities for electives in particular areas of cardiology. The third year provides an opportunity for concentration in areas of a fellow’s special clinical interest, which may include invasive or non-invasive cardiology, transesophageal echo and nuclear medicine. A yearly course leading to nuclear licensing is offered.

Clinical and basic investigations are currently active in the areas of cardiac arrhythmias pathophysiology and therapy of heart failure hyperlipidemia and coronary artery disease as well as in the development of new therapeutic modalities. It is expected that all fellows fulfill a research requirement that involves, at a minimum, the completion of a publishable research report.
