This 4 to 8 week hematology laboratory elective will be coordinated with the Hartford Hospital Pathology Residency Training program. The elective will emphasize current hematological concepts with special emphasis on the laboratory approach to the diagnosis hematological disorders.
The Hematology elective includes interaction with three laboratory hematopathologists
(Drs. Rezuke, DiGuiseppe and Sherburne), one hematopathology fellow and at least one pathology resident, all of whom are available to review morphology and other hematology/coagulation studies with the hematology/oncology fellow on elective
Goals and Objectives
The fellow will be able to understand and interpret the various laboratory tests used in the diagnostic evaluation of patient with malignant blood disorders.
Activities and Responsibilities of Fellows:
The hematology/oncology fellow will be under the guidance of the hematology laboratory Director and Assistant Directors, and will also work with pathology fellows and residents also on rotation in the Hematology Laboratory.
The fellow will attend to activities in the laboratory on a daily basis which will include (but not limited to) participation in daily sign-out activities with hematopathologists, review blood smears, bone marrows and lymph node specimens, review flow cytometry reports, review molecular diagnostic reports, review hemoglobin electrophoresis
Evaluation:
At the end of the rotation, the fellow will be evaluated utilizing the locally adapted evaluation form available electronically on MEC. This will be a composite evaluation completed by the director of the elective. Additionally, the elective director will discuss the evaluation with the fellow.

A. The fellow will develop the ability to properly triage pathology specimens.
B. The fellow will clearly and timely review the results of pathology with the referring physician to ensure optimal patient care.
