Neuro-Oncology Elective

Description:

This is a 2-4 week elective. The fellow will attend the neuro-oncology clinics primarily in the offices of Dr. Flowers who is a neuro-oncologist at HH.

Goals and Objectives:

The fellow will understand the principle cancers of the central nervous system and have an ability to assess these patients and propose a plan of care.

Evaluation:

At the end of the rotation, the fellow will be evaluated utilizing the locally adapted evaluation form available electronically on MEC.  This will be a composite evaluation completed by the director of the elective.  Additionally, the elective director will discuss the evaluation with the fellow. 

Competency:

I. Patient Care

A.     The fellow will demonstrate an ability to care for patients with CNS tumors.  This will include having the ability to assess patients and apply a rational plan of care.

II. Medical Knowledge

A.     The fellow will become familiar with the epidemiology, pathology and tumor biology of CNS tumors, the staging of CNS tumors, the standard chemotherapy and radiation therapy (including side effects), and supportive care for patients with CNS tumors.

III. Practice Based Learning

A.      The fellow will plan a seminar/journal club related to the discipline of neuro-oncology.

IV. Interpersonal and Communication Skills

A.     The fellow will be able to communicate to the referring physicians the patients’ clinical status both in the form of a written report and through oral communication

V. Professionalism

A.     The fellow will respect the right of the patients to participate in shared decision making and act autonomously.

VI. Systems Based Practice

A.     The fellow will understand the role of the radiation oncologist in the management of the cancer patient and how they relate to the care provided by other cancer specialists (i.e. medical oncologist, social worker, nurse, etc.).
