Curriculum

resident in lab The Osteopathic Rotating Internship is divided into 13 four-week block rotations. The core curriculum includes rotations in Ward Medicine, Critical Care, Ambulatory Family Medicine, OB/GYN, and Surgery. In addition to these, the interns rotate through Emergency Medicine, Ambulatory Internal Medicine, and have an elective choice. There is a written curriculum in each of these disciplines, which includes learning objectives, reading list, well-delineated clinical responsibilities, and scheduled teaching sessions for all rotations.

The Osteopathic interns rotate through all the hospitals affiliated with the Medicine Residency Programs.

Osteopathic principles and practice are incorporated throughout the program and curriculum during the PGY 1 year.

Family Practice

  • Team Structure
    The intern cares for patients in the Family Practice Center in conjunction with the Family Practice faculty.

  • Educational Activities
    Throughout the rotation, interns have weekly discussions about family development and integrating psychosocial issues into patient care. Principles of Geriatric Primary Care are learned in weekly sessions. During the rotation, the intern will be exposed to office-based procedures, pharmacotherapeutics, nutrition therapy, and family and social development. Interns also attend the OMT and RIT clinics at Hartford Hospital twice a week.

Surgery

  • Team Structure
    The Osteopathic intern will have exposure to four weeks of Outpatient Surgery supervised by the Department of Surgery at Saint Francis. The interns become an integral part of the surgical team and work with Surgical faculty and residents.

  • Education Activities
    Understand the differential diagnosis and initial management of common surgical conditions. Understand the necessary components of the preoperative evaluation. Perform basic outpatient surgical skills, such as suture repair of simple wounds, and excisional biopsy of suspicious skin lesions. Become familiar with the scope of surgical expertise of surgical subspecialists, such as ENT, Plastic, Orthopedic, Vascular, Cardiothoracic, and Urologic Surgeons.

Woman's Health

  • Team Structure
    The Osteopathic intern will be fully integrated in the OB/GYN team at Hartford Hospital. They will work under the supervision of the Woman's Ambulatory Attending Staff in the Woman's Health Center.

  • Educational Activities
    - To develop a good understanding of the female pelvic anatomy.
    - To develop the ability to perform a complete women's health-focused history, including sexual history, obstetrical history, age-appropriate screening, domestic violence screening, and risk factor screening.
    - To develop the ability to perform a thorough physical exam, including pelvic exam, recto-vaginal exam, PAP smear, and breast exam.
    - To be introduced to the evaluation and management of the menopausal patient. This will include appropriate counseling about risk factors and various therapeutic options.
    - Treatment of vasomotor symptoms, mood disorders, urogenital atrophic complications, osteoporosis, and the emerging benefits of hormone replacement therapy will be covered.
