The University of Connecticut Health Center is composed of three main units: the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the UConn Health System. Founded in 1961, the Health Center pursues a mission of providing outstanding health care education in an environment of exemplary patient care, research, and public service. The Health Center's main campus is situated on 150 acres of wooded hilltop in the beautiful, historic community of Farmington. From this vantage point, the skyline of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, can be seen about eight miles to the east.
John Dempsey Hospital is a 224-bed facility that provides state-of-the-art care across all disciplines. All of the latest medical technologies are available. The Health Center is at the forefront of translational research, bringing advances in bench research to the bedside. This has been accomplished through the development of Centers of Excellence, or the Signature Programs. These include The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center, the UConn Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UConn Sports Medicine Musculoskeletal Institute.

Research Programs - Since the Health Center's inception, its administration and faculty have been committed to maintaining high-quality research programs as part of the institution's fabric. This commitment has enabled the Health Center to recruit distinguished researchers with expertise in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Molecular Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Cell Physiology, Toxicology, and Endocrinology, among other fields. The Alcohol Research Center is one of only 14 such federally-supported Centers in the nation; the Connecticut Clinical Chemosensory Research Center, one of five; and the Claude Pepper Older American Independence Center, one of 10.
Clinical research is facilitated by the Lowell Weicker General Clinical Research Center, and intellectual endeavors of all kinds are supported by the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library. The library serves as the Regional Medical Library for New England - one of eight in the federally-supported National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

aerial photo of Hartford Hospital Hartford Hospital, one of the largest Medical Centers in New England, was created in 1854. Since its inception, the hospital has been at the forefront of innovative approaches to health care and service to the sick. In 1877, the hospital became the fourth in the county to open a School of Nursing modeled on the Nightingale plan. Today, 146 years later, Hartford Hospital remains keenly aware that its founding was based on need and that its present and future rely on meeting the needs of the Hartford community and the citizens of Connecticut. The hospital's vision is to be Connecticut's premier provider of comprehensive and community health care and our mission is to promote, restore and maintain the health of all the people we serve. Hartford Hospital has been recognized as one of the top 100 hospitals in the country for three years running.

Situated in the south end of Hartford, Hartford Hospital is licensed for 819 beds, has a medical staff of 828 physicians, occupies 45 patient care and support buildings, and approximately 2.1 million occupied square feet of space. In 1999, there were 57,000 Emergency Room visits and 36,023 admissions. As a major Tertiary Referral Center, the hospital provides state-of-the-art medical care through a rapidly developing integrated delivery system. In 1994 Hartford Hospital acquired the 172 year-old Institute of Living, one of the nation's oldest and most respected psychiatric facilities, which is located on an adjacent campus. The hospital has established clinical centers of emphasis and excellence in specialty areas of Oncology (Harry Gray Cancer Center), Cardiology, Mental Health (Institute of Living), Trauma, Primary Care, Diabetes, Asthma, and Women's Health. It is only one of two centers in Connecticut providing organ transplantation (heart, liver, pancreas and kidney) and is a major provider of state-of-the-art cardiovascular services. Hartford Hospital is designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center and operates the state's only helicopter transport system, LIFE STAR.

Hartford Hospital has been in the forefront in Graduate Medical Education for many decades and that rich tradition continues to this day. The Department of Medicine has 300 physicians on its staff, many of them actively involved in Graduate Medical Education. The hospital currently participates in integrated residencies in all specialties of Medicine, through its affiliation with the University of Connecticut Health Center.
