The University of Connecticut Health Center
The University of Connecticut School of Medicine, John Dempsey Hospital, itself is a relatively new institution, having opened its doors to patients in the spring of 1975. It is a modern, uniquely designed medical center with all of its departments housed in one semi circular structure. It is an expression of a basic philosophy emphasizing continuity in teaching, research and clinical services.
Major facilities within this center include the medical and dental schools, extensive research areas, the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library, a 200 bed general hospital, medical and dental outpatient clinics, the emergency service and the administrative units. General services to these areas include an extensive communications and computer system and a closed circuit television network. Concomitant with the extensive use of modern technology, the careful planning of the center in its suburban setting has helped to create an efficient, yet comfortable atmosphere in which to work.
This is the hub of our program. Although the overall service here is very small, it plays a critical role in resident education. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine service provides clinical and didactic education on a significant volume of very high-risk obstetrical patients. We have a strong Gyn Oncology program without fellows. The Reproductive Endocrinology Division is one of the largest and most successful IVF programs in the Northeast.
