It is essential, in order to progress in your otolaryngology residency, that you pursue an active course of independent reading. You should focus on committing to your personal education over the next four years. You will, of course, be reading for Journal Club and lecture presentations as well the resident is expected to become familiar with the required Home Study Course and the required SIPAC reading list on each rotation during the four-year period of training.
HOME STUDY COURSE
Each resident is required to subscribe to the Home Study Course that is sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, Inc. This course consists of an every-other month publication of selected recent articles and bibliographies in Otolaryngology. A different topic is covered every two months and rotates on an every two year basis: Neoplastic Diseases, Plastic and Reconstructive Problems, Metabolic and Other Diseases, Trauma and Critical Care, Degenerative and Idiopathic Diseases, Congenital and Pediatric Problems, Special Sensory and Motor Disturbances, Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases, Rhinology and Allergic Diseases, and Laryngology, Voice disorders, and Bronchoesophogology. The resident is required to complete and submit an examination upon completing each section. A copy of the report of the score is mailed to the Program Director and will be added to the residents folder for review and evaluation.
SIPAC’S
A complete collection of the Otolaryngology Self-Instructional Packets (SIPacs) is provided for resident education. For those who did not receive a collection there is a complete library is in the “resident room”. Below is the required SIPAC rotation specific reading list.
