The Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Training Program was established in 1996 to meet the growing demands for new venues for primary care training at the University of Connecticut. The residency is a four year program which is divided equally to allow for 26 block rotations in both medicine and pediatrics. The program is directed by Kiki Nissen, M.D. and Mark Greenstein, MD, under the combined jurisdiction of both the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Departments. The residency program has two houseofficers each year who rotate in tandem through medicine and pediatrics.

Housestaff rotations in medicine and pediatrics are closely integrated into the respective training programs of each department. The year includes 13 four-week blocks. For interns, four blocks of medicine are followed by five rotations in pediatrics and then four additional rotations in medicine. The medicine rotations include ward, ICU, ambulatory care, emergency medicine and elective experiences. Pediatric training at the intern level includes wards, ambulatory care, newborn and developmental growth rotations. By dividing the year roughly into thirds, housestaff are exposed to the seasonal variation of disease states.

Upper level medicine/pediatrics residents have increased clinical responsibilities and a variety of unique clinical experiences to prepare them for primary care practice or additional specialized training. The program includes a total of 10 elective or selective rotations with experiences that range from neonatology to geriatrics, and include adolescent medicine, opportunities for combined experiences in dermatology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, cardiology and a variety of outpatient and inpatient rotations at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Housestaff pairs at each training level share medicine and pediatric group practices in their weekly continuity clinics. Graduates from the program are Board-eligible in both medicine and pediatrics.
