The Pediatric Oncology Service evaluates and treats approximately 100 new cases of childhood leukemia and solid tumors annually. The cumulative patient roster is over 1000. In addition to the cancer program, children with a variety of hematologic disorders such as hemolytic anemias, sickle cell anemia, leukopenias, leukocyte dysfunction syndromes, and coaguloapthies are diagnosed and managed. There are related comprehensive clinics for hemophilia and sickle cell anemia.

The division is a full member of the Children's Oncology Group and participates in new treatment protocols for acute leukemias, neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, and brain tumors. Other research activities include studies on coagulation, on relief of pain related to diagnostic procedures and the study of hematopoietic stem cells and their response to various growth factors. Residents are exposed to this area through electives and during participation in most services. They are welcome to participate in divisional research.
