ophthalmology
The Pediatric Ophthalmology Division is based in the offices of the faculty. The members of the division maintain a busy schedule of clinical activities. The patient population is limited to pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, the latter group involving less than 5 percent of the clinical load. Clinical problems fall into the general areas of the developing visual system, focusing on changing refractive errors, eye muscle balance problems, inherited syndromes, and the role of vision in learning. A full orthopedic staff supports the physician group in the analysis and care of motility problems. Inpatient consultation is offered at all of the Hartford area hospitals. However, most of the ophthalmologic surgery is done at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The faculty provides a program of weekly evaluation for hospitalized neonates at risk for retinopathy of prematurity. They have been recognized by the residents for excellence in teaching, and offer a very highly subscribed elective in pediatric ophthalmology.
