The PL-2 year focuses on skill and knowledge enhancement, and career development. Greater emphasis is also placed on independent decision-making as residents assume the role of supervisor. More in-depth knowledge of both general and subspecialty pediatrics is acquired for the role of supervisor and teacher. During the PL-2 year, the resident participates more in morning report, presents and facilitates a case management conference by preparing formal group presentations for this resident teaching conference.
The PL-2 residents are assigned to three rotations in the ambulatory pediatric practice, including continued longitudinal experience. They have their first opportunity to supervise on the inpatient service with close faculty support. There is a second higher acuity emergency medicine experience, and the first two PICU rotations, which include a transport medicine component. The block rotation in adolescent medicine occurs in the second year with in-depth instruction and exposure in this area. There is a NICU rotation at John Dempsey Hospital, and three elective block rotations. Residents also have their first Night Float and teaching resident exposures. Night call is every fourth night for the critical care (PICU) service. Inpatient is covered by night float Sunday through Thursday, and by weekend assignments on two of the four weekends. E.D. is covered by shift assignments: days, evenings, or overnight. There is a call-free elective, and the other rotations have reduced calls, which includes 10 or 11 sick calls over the course of the year. Calls during adolescent medicine and elective experiences are minimized to ensure adequate exposure. PL-2 residents receive four weeks of vacation, taken during ambulatory rotations. Holiday coverage is as described for PL-1 residents. |
