The Division of Adolescent Medicine is based at the Department of
Pediatrics in Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, and adolescent
medicine specialists are present at the training sites where adolescent
medicine is practiced. The Adolescent Medicine Service offers
comprehensive care to adolescents ages 13-21, including medical and
mental health care, and substance abuse and nutrition counseling. This
is provided in a team approach. Special services include an adolescent
prenatal and parenting program, a sexual abuse program, and clinics for
adolescents with diabetes and sickle cell disease, and a colposcopy
clinic. Research interests include assessment of depression,
reproductive health care and sexually transmitted diseases, teen
prenatal care and parenthood, and substance and sexual abuse. During the
required block rotation in the PL-2 year, residents are exposed to the
adolescent medicine services at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical
Center, at the college health and sports medicine services at Wesleyan
University, and in the community, including an adolescent gynecology
experience in a family planning clinic.
Additional experiences are integrated longitudinally into the ambulatory
practice and inpatient experiences. |
