Emergency Department
The emergent care of the critically ill and injured child occurs in the 12 room
Connecticut Children's Medical Center Emergency Department. With an annual census
of 35,000 visits, pediatric residents have the opportunity to evaluate and care
for children with the full spectrum of medical and surgical emergencies. The CCMC
ED is staffed 24 hours a day by attending physicians. The attending physicians
precept the pediatric resident on all patients they see and provide ongoing
case-based teaching during these interactions. These physicians also serve as
medical control for the pediatric transport team. Other educational activities
include weekly pediatric emergency medicine case conferences, emergency radiology
conference, mock codes, and a pediatric emergency medicine longitudinal elective.
Residents are assigned to the CCMC ED one month each year and also perform cross
coverage during their primary care rotation.
23 Hour Unit
The CCMC ED is immediately adjacent to the 11 bed pediatric 23 hour unit or
observation unit. Here children with common pediatric diseases such as asthma,
dehydration, seizures, poisoning and abdominal pain are cared for up to 24
hours after presentation to ensure a safe discharge home. Patients undergoing
elective procedures or testing are also treated here. Of the 1500 patients/year
admitted to the observation unit, approximately 1000 are cared for by the
Pediatric Emergency Medicine division. Pediatric residents share in the care
of these patients under attending supervision in the course of their Emergency
Department rotations.
Toxicology service
This service is staffed by 2 board certified medical toxicologists in the
Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. These attending physicians provide
inpatient medical toxicology consultation, serve as consultants to the
Connecticut Regional Poison Control Center in Farmington, CT and provide
faculty for the Toxicology Longitudinal Elective available to pediatric residents.
