Residents spend three rotations total in the two neonatal intensive care units served by the program. The Connecticut Children's Medical Center NICU is a level III-B unit serving a delivery service of approximately 4,000 annually with 32 intensive care beds and is the referral center for the Regional Newborn Cardiac Program. The John Dempsey Hospital NICU has 40 beds and serves as the major focus for tertiary referral of high-risk mothers and infants for Northern Connecticut. The CCMC NICU has a follow-up clinic which residents may choose to attend longitudinally. The Neonatal Fellowship Program contributes to the teaching at each site, and many residents have elected to pursue their fellowship in this program.
The division has broadly based research programs in both clinical and laboratory research. Clinical areas of interest center in neonatal behavior management, neonatal nutrition, breastfeeding medicine, neonatal immunology and infection, cerebral blood flow measurement, BPD, and Laboratory research interests include surfactant production and cerebral metabolism and nutrient uptake.
A number of residents and neonatology fellows have been involved in neonatal research projects which have resulted in presentations at regional and national meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Both NICUs have a rich clinical database available for research projects. Special elective and research electives in neonatology are encouraged.
