The division has an active inpatient and outpatient service, with approximately 4,600 outpatient visits annually, and an average daily census of 3-5 inpatients. Patients with the spectrum of pulmonary diseases are followed, including asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, neuromuscular disease and chronic respiratory failure requiring home mechanical ventilation. Infant and pediatric pulmonary function, exercise and bronchoprovocation testing, sleep polysomnography, and fiberoptic bronchoscopy services are provided.
Research interests in the division include allergic sensitization and tolerance, asthma cystic fibrosis and respiratory disease in sickle cell disease. Residents have in-depth exposure to division faculty during their inpatient service months at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and through clinical and research electives that are available.
The division also offers a fellowship program in pediatric pulmonology.
