The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology includes 2 physicians, 2 nurses, and support staff. Nearly 700 new outpatients and 2300 established patients are seen each year, either at CCMC, or at one of 6 satellite locations. Common diagnoses seen include juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Lyme disease, spondyloarthropathies, systemic rheumatic diseases (lupus, dermatomyosits, etc), fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain syndromes.
Residents rotate through rheumatology either as a block elective (4 weeks), or as a longitudinal elective. Reading material is provided, and hand's-on clinical skills are emphasized. Residents are responsible for rounding on the inpatients prior to the outpatient clinic schedule. They are expected to present a topic in depth toward the end of the rotation. After 4 weeks on the service, residents typically feel confident in their musculoskeletal exams, know diagnostic criteria for the rheumatic diseases, and understand some of the basic pathophysiology involved.
A Pediatric Radiology elective is offered to pediatric residents from CCMC and medical students from the University Of Connecticut School of Medicine. Opportunity for clinical research in pediatric radiology is available.
The spectrum of imaging services includes computed radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI and fluoroscopy of neonates, infants and children. Nuclear Medicine and advanced Interventional Radiology services are provided with collaboration from the Department of Radiology at Hartford Hospital.
