The University of Connecticut Health Center continues to play a vital role as a residency program resource. It is part of an integrated complex that includes the University of Connecticut's Medical and Dental Schools, John Dempsey Hospital, the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library, which is the regional coordination center for medical libraries in the northeastern United States, and the School of Public Health. Our residents may matriculate for their M.P.H. degrees during their training here in pediatrics. A number of our residents have already completed this program.

The health center is the home for our second Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a 40-bed level-III unit where over 400 critically ill newborns are cared for annually. A large portion of these infants are admitted via the high-risk maternal transport program developed jointly with the regional Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program. The Regional Neonatal Transport Program is implemented through this site as well. This NICU has developed extensive programs in research, education, and follow-up care. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is taught to all residents by the combined NICU faculty.

The University of Connecticut Health Center also houses many of the departmental research laboratories. Residents have elected to participate in these research activities as part of their curriculum, and some of these efforts have resulted in peer-reviewed publications. These activities are important in preparing residents for fellowship.
