The University of Connecticut School of Medicine offers an accredited three-year training program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Exposure to sleep disorders is also available and may lead to board eligibility in Sleep Medicine. The goal of the program is to train Pulmonary and Critical Care physicians with the skills necessary for them to excel as clinicians, whether in the academic or practice realm.

The program is designed to provide the trainee with a broad variety of experiences, as reflected by the hospitals which take part in the program.

John Dempsey Hospital is a university referral center providing the opportunity to care for patients with many types of lung diseases and providing experience in a busy multi-disciplinary Intensive Care Unit.

The Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center is a large inner-city hospital as well as a referral center with a busy Intensive Care Unit and a Pulmonary Consult Service which provides care to patients with a wide variety of problems, including pulmonary infectious diseases, and airways disease. There is also exposure to brachytherapy and endobronchial laser therapy.

New Britain General Hospital provides exposure to a busy medical/surgical Intensive Care Unit. The VA Hospital has an extremely active Outpatient Clinic.

Hospital for Special Care provides experience in pulmonary rehabilitation and weaning patients from ventilatory support.

The program also provides ample opportunity to become skilled at all Pulmonary and Critical Care procedures including bronchoscopy, pleural biopsy, chest tube placement and invasive monitoring.
