Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program

Fellowship Structure

Program Description of Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship ProgramFellowship Structure of Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship ProgramApplication Process of Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program

Trainees spend approximately an equal amount of time during the first two years doing Intensive Care rotations and Pulmonary Consult rotations. The third year is divided into two halves, with one half being further clinical rotations and the other half as research or elective time. While many fellows elect to spend time doing basic science or clinical research projects, other fellows have elected to pursue further clinical experiences in the areas such as Sleep Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Anesthesiology or Chest Radiology. One month time during the six month research/elective block is spent at the Hospital for Special Care. The program provides ample outpatient experience, with each fellow having a continuity clinic throughout the three-year Fellowship. In addition, a variety of outpatient experiences are provided through clinics at each of the affiliated hospitals.

The fellows take part in several structured conferences throughout the program. There is a weekly Intercity Conference at the University of Connecticut Medical Center which is a case-based conference. There is in addition a weekly didactic conference directed at the fellows level. Each hospital has a regular conference schedule. There is a fellow run Journal Club that meets approximately once a month.

Most fellows elect to perform clinical research projects which often lead to presentation at national and international meetings. Generally, each fellow is funded to attend one meeting a year.
