The University of Connecticut School of Medicine/St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center Integrated Residency Program in radiology is a four year training program in diagnostic imaging.
A prerequisite of entry into the program is one post graduate clinical year. While the department of radiology does not provide the PGY-1 year, the University of Connecticut and many other institutions in the area offer excellent internships in both the medical and surgical specialties.
The Diagnostic Radiology program is designed to provide a resident with extensive training in all aspects of diagnostic imaging. Our aim is to train a competent, well rounded diagnostic radiologist. The training takes place at John Dempsey Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, and also at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center located in downtown Hartford, approximately ten miles from the University Center.
Almost all of the first two years training takes place at the University hospital and a significant part of the subsequent two years is at the St. Francis Hospital. There are supplemental rotations in pediatrics at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and all residents are required to attend a four week course at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. There is time for elective and research activities during the latter part of the third and fourth year. Research activity, paper and poster presentation, and publication are strongly encouraged.
Most days there are two, one hour teaching conferences with some of the lectures and conferences given at St. Francis which are then teleconferenced back to the University hospital. Residents are expected to attend these conferences and these conferences take precedence over clinical responsibilities. Interdisciplinary and interdepartmental conferences occur each month as does a journal club and a radiologic pathology correlation conference.
Grand Round conferences occur the second Wednesday of each month with a visiting professor who spends the afternoon with the residents providing a master class in the afternoon and then in the early evening delivers a talk on a new and exciting topic in radiology. Residents also attend the monthly New England Roentgen Ray Society programs in Boston, MA. |
